50 Metre Spring Open Meeting 2024

The BFRC 50 Metre  Open Meeting was held on the Malcolm Cooper Range in Lord Roberts Centre, Bisley as usual Due to other events going on at the same time it was only possible to run 2 relays of prone on the Saturday. There were insufficient entries to enable the 3P to run on the Sunday.

Again we decided to not use Match Manager, but to sort out the decimal scoring direct from the till rolls. My thanks go to Pam Webber for doing the necessary mental arithmetic rapidly and efficiently so we could enter scores and produce results rapidly with only a couple of corrections required. Thanks also go to the range staff, James Marsh Brown as CRO, Peter Robinson and I suppose myself as ROs, for keeping us all in order. Also many thanks go to the NSRA staff for keeping the ancient electronic targets working. It is clear that a lot of hard work has gone into maintenance of the targets and we had only one equipment failure this year, the same as last year.

Because of the limited entries we only ran the 2 relays Saturday, which did mean a more relaxed start as the first call to the line was 11:00, rather than the usual 08:30.

Note in the results that Bray, Evans and Welsh are IPC shooters hence not available for the main medal match. However as there were 3 of them we awarded a medal for the best combined score over the 2 relays. In the results you will see there scores having a P alongside to denote that they are Paralympians. It is good to see them competing at the same time as everyone else and I am all for encouraging more of it in the future.

The weather was very kind to us this year, for once it was actually warm on the range rather than the usual cold conditions we normally meet. However the shooting conditions were more interesting with quite a tricky wind all day. Oddly the wind did seem to ease in the afternoon, but scores in relay 2 did not indicate that it was any easier to read.

Given the conditions there were some very good scores in relay 1.Simon Green came out on top, with Chris Hunter 2.4 points behind and Liam Webster in third again just another 1.5 points down. It just goes to show that getting near to the centre of the bull for the decimal points really does make quite a difference.

The second English match looked as if it should have been easier as the wind levels had dropped. However it was more fickle and the scores generally reflected that. There was also some speculation that, this early in the season people were not used to doing 2 matches one after the other and that fatigue may have had an effect. Despite this Chris Hunter managed to take the top slot with a score only a couple of points down on his earlier score. Simon Green then took second place a mere 0.2 points ahead of Ian Potts in thirds place.

Alun Evans was the best paralympian shooter with a combined score across the 2 relays of 1202.0 beating  Richard Bray who scored 1201.3, so very close across the 2 relays.

Hopefully we will be able to run a meeting again next year, given enough entries and get 3P going again.  I have provisionally booked the range for 15/16 April 2025 with this in mind.
